HELICOPTER ACCESS

Helicopter flights depart from Canmore Municipal Heliport (located in the Town of Canmore) or Mount Shark Helipad (one hour drive from Canmore). Guests arriving on public transport are priority passengers for the Canmore flight. Depending on logistics you (and your group) may be flying from Canmore Municipal Heliport or Mount Shark Helipad. Helicopter staging areas will be confirmed one week prior to trip departure.

Advanced Canmore flight confirmation is an additional $100.00 per person for a roundtrip based on availability.

CANMORE MUNICIPAL HELIPORT

Check in: 8:15 am
Location: 91 Bow Valley Trail. Canmore, Alberta. Log building with a the red roof.
Parking:  Parking is limited at the Canmore Municipal Heliport. We recommend car pooling with members of your group whenever possible. If you have friends in Canmore, please consider parking offsite and arranging to be dropped off at the Heliport. There is no overnight parking available for RV’s or trailers at the Canmore Municipal Heliport.

MOUNT SHARK HELIPAD

Check in: 8:45 am
Location: Mount Shark Helipad.
Parking: There is no driving and/or parking allowed on the Mount Shark helicopter staging area. Park at the five minute unloading area at the end of the helipad access road. Unload your gear and return your car to the parking area.

Directions to the Mount Shark Helipad (Route #1)
-Allow 1 hour of driving time from Canmore.
-Follow signs to the Canmore Nordic Centre.
-Continue past the Canmore Nordic Center.
-The road will turn to gravel and you will continue on the Spray Lakes Road/Smith-Dorrien (#742 South) for 37 kilometers.
-Turn right onto the Mt. Shark Road. Drive past the sign for Engadine Lodge and over the bridge.
-Continue down the winding road for 2.5 km. Turn left following the sign to Mt Shark Helipad.
-On your left will be the Mount Shark Helipad parking area. Continue to the right to the helipad. Park at the five minute unloading area at the end of the helipad access road. Do not drive onto the helicopter staging area. Unload your gear and return your car to the parking area.

Directions to the Mount Shark Helipad (Route #2)
-Allow 1.5 hours of driving time from Canmore.
-Leaving Canmore follow #1 TransCanada Highway East and exit on Highway #40 (Kananaskis Trail).
-Turn right and head south on Highway 40 passing Nakiska Ski Hill, Kananaskis Golf Course and Fortress Mountain Ski Hill.
-Turn right (west) at the Smith-Dorrien Spray Trail turnoff (#742). Turn right again and follow the Smith-Dorrien Spray Trail for 30 km.
-Turn left on Mt Shark Road. Drive past the sign for Engadine Lodge and over the bridge.
-Continue down the winding road for 2.5 km. Turn left following the sign to Mt Shark Helipad.

GEAR ALLOWANCE

Summer:
Maximum baggage weight per guest 15 KG.

Winter:
Maximum baggage weight per guest 17 KG
One pair of skis or snowshoe per guest.

Excess baggage fee: $4.00 per KG

THE BASICS

  • Space is limited. Gear must be limited to essentials.
  • Gear above the luggage allowance will incur the excess baggage fee.
  • More than one bag is allowed provided the bags meet the weight limits.
  • We reserve the right to refuse oversize bags/items.
  • Working dogs only allowed on the helicopter.

PREPARE LIKE A PRO FOR THE HELICOPTER

Wear ski boots, helmut and ski clothing. Prescriptions on your person.

No wheelies and hard sided suitcases. We love small duffels and day packs. If you have an avalanche pack, let the helicopter loader know.

No dingle dongels hanging off your pack.

Wine and beer is available for purchase at the lodge. Should you want to bring libations (other than wine and beer), please transfer to a plastic container.

SUMMER

  • Bear spray will be provided at the lodge. Do not bring bear spray on the helicopter.

HELICOPTER SAFETY

  • Be on time for check in. Move slowly and calmly around the helicopter.
  • Your gear will be loaded and unloaded from the helicopter by Talus or Alpine Helicopter staff.

Consider staying at the Paintbox Lodge, our sister property in downtown Canmore. Talus Lodge guests receive 10% off and we will waive the two night minimum. Complimentary breakfast is provided at the Paintbox at 7:30 am on your Talus departure day to allow enough time to get to your staging area.
